Malcolm Duthie, a senior scientist at the Infectious Disease Research Institute in Seattle, led a team of researchers who developed a blood test for leprosy which can provide a result in ten minutes.

Like many neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), leprosy affects under-served, margilinalized populations who are often the poorest of the poor, making rapid, affordable tests essential for the management and elimination of these diseases. This new leprosy test is one possible solution in the elimination of leprosy.

What common barriers exist across NTDS? What role do diagnostics play in eliminating these diseases? What requirements are needed of new technologies?
