Despite the lifelong benefits of antiretroviral therapy, systematic investigations of retention in treatment have documented high rates of loss to follow-up from HIV treatment programs. The authors of this paper introduce an explanation for missed clinic visits and disengagement among patients enrolled in HIV treatment and care programs in sub-Saharan Africa.
