Population Health Impact and Cost-Effectiveness of Tuberculosis Diagnosis with Xpert MTB/RIF: A Dynamic Simulation and Economic Evaluation presents the results of an evaluation of the health and economic consequences of implementing Xpert in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland. In all five southern African countries TB drug resistance and TB-HIV co-infection are prevalent. The authors used a mathematical model to compare the status quo diagnostic algorithm again the Xpert. The study found that implementation of Xpert would avert132,000 TB cases and 182,000 TB deaths in southern Africa over 10 years following introduction of Xpert, and would reduce prevalence by 28% by 2022.
